To stay aligned with our values and mission, I'm sharing the story of Freya, or "FreyBear" as we call her. She looks like a little polar bear — but a skinny one.
Freya is a German Shepherd/Husky mix who was literally adopted on the side of the road for $100 in Roswell, New Mexico.
Ten months ago, we were on a road trip to Albuquerque to visit my youngest son, who was living there at the time. We decided to do a day trip to Roswell — mainly because I'm a sci-fi nerd and like the idea of aliens from outer space.
On the way out, my son yelled from the back seat, "Dad, puppies!" — pointing at a dirt parking lot where a man and woman were advertising puppies for sale.
Naturally, my fiancée made a 90-degree turn through four lanes of traffic to get to them.
We got out, and the moment she saw Freya, the die was cast — my fate was sealed. I was leaving Roswell with an 8-week-old German Shepherd/Husky mix. My fiancée paid the $100, and we took Freya home. We then proceeded to spend another $150 at a nearby HomeGoods on a dog bed, collar, toys, and treats — already.
I wasn't quite ready for a new puppy after losing Max, our elder German Shepherd of 12 years. But it all turned out for the best.
Rev got a new buddy, and Freya helps fill the void of losing Max.
And Freya? She lives like a spoiled little princess.
The moral here: it doesn't matter where they come from — purebred or mutt, every dog needs a good home and good people to love them. That's all they ever ask. If you can help us help them, make a purchase knowing you'll be helping some dog, somewhere, find a great home.
Here's a pic of Rev and Freya 10 months later.
